Music as Meditation with Nora Rogers
Join us for a unique mediation workshop that blends philosophy, technique, and the magic of live music. Led by Recess Yoga Studio owner Tom Sowders, PhD, this session begins with an exploration of foundational meditation principles and practical techniques to deepen your practice.
Meditators with all levels of experience--even none!--are welcome.
What to expect:
This workshop features improvisational cellist Nora Rogers, who, drawing from a place under the thinking mind, will create dynamic music, as participants, after a little breath and mantra instruction (and just a little) practice, gently place and keep their attention on Nora’s evocative music.
Thus, reducing the noise of thought with steady attention to the feeling-tones, sensations, and other types of direct experience felt during the musical meditation.
After Nora's composition has ended, the session will transition to an open discussion with Nora and workshop participants (you).
Whether you’re new to meditation or a seasoned practitioner, this workshop offers a fresh perspective on mindfulness and the interplay between music and meditation.
You are welcome to journal--or not--after the music has ended and discussion begun.
- Suitable for all experience levels
-Bring a notebook and pen for journaling, if desired
-Comfortable clothing recommended
Let beauty take the place of thought during this one-of-a-kind experience.

Yoga for Directing the Mind: A practical introduction to Patanjali's Yoga Sutras
Patanjai's yoga sutras 'remains the most remarkably clear and precise treatise on the human psyche.' In this 3 hour workshop we will start with a brief asana and pranayama practice. Then we will take a brief bird's eye view of the four chapters of the yoga sutras. Finally we will zoom in on a few key sutras in the first two chapters that define yoga, practice, the 8 limbs, and what we can do to achieve yoga. We will first chant the sutra (call and response), then define it, and then open the floor to discussion. The goal is to discover our own relationship to each idea rather than give a hard definition, as we all see the same truth from different perspectives. Some key translations referred to are 'Liberating Isolation' by Frans Moors and T.K.V. Desikachar's translations found in the book 'The Heart of Yoga'. If you have other translations that you would like to contribute to the discussion, you may bring them to the discussion as well.
This Workshop is offered at Pay What You Can Pricing, with three price tiers.
$50, our base Workshop Price for this session
$75, our suggested rate for this session
$100, our supporter rate for this session, designed to allow the accessible $50 rate, while making sure the teacher is compensated for their time.
