Tom Sowders, PHD, is--first--a student of yoga and second a sharer of it. He took his first class in 1994 and has been sharing yoga as an instructor since 2018. Tom's style of yoga combines Ashtanga Vinyasa, Sivananda, HIIT style fitness, and meditation. A major goal for Tom is to train the mind to be fully present on and off the mat in order to experience the joy that comes flooding once you remove the old layers of familiarity. Can you tap into the power of your inner child in order to see your practice (and the world) with fresh eyes? Tom thinks it's a worthy enterprise. Tom brings a background in studying poetry and music to his practice and teaching.
Recess Yoga was opened in October 2023 by Tom Sowders with a vision of accessible and approachable yoga and movement in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro community. A welcoming and down-to-earth vibe verging on downright fun paired with attentive and inspired teaching in a convenient location, Recess is on a mission to bring yoga to a more prominent place in the community.
